Breathe In

Felicity Jones

Synopsis: The story of a love affair between a foreign exchange student and a high school teacher.

Review: A foreign exchange student named Sophie ( Felicity Jones ) is allowed to stay with an American family as part of her program. As she learns to adapt to the new environment, she starts falling for Keith Reynolds ( Guy Pearce ) a teacher and man of the house she is staying at. They start to have an affair and plan to leave together all the while abandoning his family.

Felicity Jones

Felicity Jones did great in this film. She is a very convening séductrice but these quite films that make no sense are likely to hurt her career rather than help it. I know this film was supposed to be well received “by those who actually saw it”, but most people who are only “now” familiar with her because of the film ROGUE ONE a Star Wars story (2016), are more than likely to have never heard of nor saw this film. I don’t think they would like this movie.

Yeah this was stupid. Who the hell would let a very attractive student stay with a family where the husband and wife are on the rocks? Like this “Man” is not going to be attracted to this girl and have an affair. The characters are a little too stupid and predicable.

Barely

Passable Movie

The cinematography is passable at best and nothing special. The lighting and color are very drab and grey, leaving the audience with a slightly depressed atmosphere. The backgrounds, set dressing, and wardrobe are passable. To the films credit, natural backgrounds where use instead of awful CGI, that’s a plus for the film. This is one of those boring movies that have a unique look but not much substance to it like the sterile film The Face of an Angel (2018) with Kate Beckinsale. The story is so slow and boring, it’s amazing. I guess this is supposed to be a more atmospheric movie but the film The Face of an Angel (2018) at least looked better than this. Watch Inferno (2016) or ROGUE ONE (2016) and skip this film. If it weren’t for the performances of Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce, I would have given this film a lower score. This movie is just average, nothing special.
