Synopsis: An American serving in the French Foreign Legion is on an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Hamunaptra, when a mummy is accidentally awakened and wreaks havoc on him and his crew.

Review: Rick O’Connell ( Brendan Fraser ) is an American serving in the French Foreign Legion on an archaeological dig. He takes the advice of a no good and very greedy man named Beni Gabor ( Kevin J. O’Connor ) in order to uncover ancient Egyptian buried treasure that does not belong to either of them. One day on the dig site the Foreign Legion comes under attack from the local natives, which leads to O’Connell’s capture. While being imprisoned, two archeologist visit him and makes a deal to have him released if he agrees to lead them to the buried treasure of the ancient city of Hamunaptra.

This is more of a comedy role for Rachel Weisz. She does well but I prefer her in films such as The Fountain (2006), The Deep Blue Sea (2011), Oz The Great and Powerful (2013), The Constant Gardener (2005), and a truly amazing film called Agora (2009). Serious roles are her strong suite, although Oz The Great and Powerful was not really a serious movie, it was not a true comedic role for her either. I don’t think people even knew who Brendan Fraser was until this films release. He does well in this franchise and that’s about it. Hopefully we will see him play in something more meaningful, but we all seem to know him as ‘that guy from The Mummy’.

Thanks to the Tom Cruise version of the film, this movie seems to not be so bad at all. This is a really silly movie. Its way too hard to take this seriously. Keep in mind that the worst place to look for historical accuracy is Hollywood. The Egyptian history in this film is horrifically inaccurate. I don’t know if Hollywood is like this on purpose or the writers in Hollywood just cant help but write totally insane sequences into their screen plays. I can see how this could even be disrespectful of Egyptian culture, painting some of their well known figures in history as villains.

The cinematography is well done. The real backgrounds and set dressing are very good. The CGI on the other hand, is horrible and inconsistent. Some of it is ok while the rest of it is just bad. Wardrobe and lighting are also well done. The bottom line is that this is a very silly and implausible film. I guess this is more of a light hearted movie, but there is a lot of death for it to be a family film. This movie is anything but boring. Something is always happening and the plot is always moving forward. At the very least you will be entertained. Watch this movie if your bored. Its a passable film at best.
